This 3D floating star / whetū painting is magical.
It's unique, as at first glance, it looks like a beautiful celestial painting, however as you move around it, and light catches the painting, a mirror / metallic pattern reflects, creating another pattern and dimension of light.
My work is extremely difficult to photograph, even with a diffuser filter on the camera, because the painting is deeply layered and looks like glass - but isn't. The last 4 short video clips almost pick up the chrome or metallic pattern as the camera moves over the painting, but not the full effect. The photos do not do this painting justice, but photos 5 & 7, while dark, almost captures the special mirror effects.
This is my best artwork ever. I’ve come a long way on this journey. I’m called Starlight by a friend Rochelle. This painting is symbolic of evolving and ascending to a higher level, having no regrets, grateful for lessons learnt that shine and illuminate the way.
I started by hand drawing a 1950's wallpaper star pattern on the canvas. It’s taken me just over four and a half years to complete, which meant working in minutiae with a magnifying glass. The artwork has about a bazillion layers, feels 3D as when you look through parts of the painting, for example in the middle of the stars, you can see through the layers of the painting.
The star pattern is metallic gold, silver and blue, and sky-blue background. I paint at different times of the day and night to work with how light interacts with the painting. This artwork looks amazing by day, and is spectacular by night, especially if you have a lamp on in the room to interact with the star patterns.
This can be hung on an angle in a diamond shape or as photographed.
I've priced this piece at $4,500, which is the length of time it took to create. A $1000 per year doesn't cover the material costs or the 1000's of hours I've put into this striking painting. I don't want to part with it and is currently hanging in my home and giving me much pleasure.
Māori proverb; He maramatanga anō tō tērā whetū, he māramatango anō tō tērā whetū. Each star has its own luminescence or presence in the sky. Each individual has their own personality.
Stars are conveyed by their intensity of light, not size. A star is a beacon of hope or shining light to guide the way and a symbol of positivity, happiness, and renewal.
In remembrance, I dedicate ‘Star Light’ to two wonderful men: Mike McGarrity (Freqbeat and Pins & Needles) and Paul Renwick (Out of Hand Scotland). Both men were the finest specimen of human beings. Good friends, guid times and many happy memories of both, sprinkling starlight.
Thankyou Mikey for introducing me tae the wee Glasgae boys Silicone Soul / Soma Records.
Aptly the theme song for the Floating Star Light painting is called Right On, by Silicone Soul.

The artworks are finished in a UV resistant resin which gives it that glass like finish. However, for longevity it’s best not to place this painting, or any artwork, or even humans or animals in direct UV / sunlight.
All multimedia work is created using top quality materials and arrives ready to be hung, with hanging hardware already attached to the back. But should you wish to professionally frame – you can do that too.
If you're considering a painting, but not 100% sure, please feel free to email me a photo of the room or space you'd like to hang the painting in. I'll email through a mock-up of what it could look like in your living room, dining room, office, kitchen or wall.
Full disclosure: The artworks, like the artist, are not perfect. I have a Siberian Husky dog called Sasquatch and some loose strands of fur may be forever immortalized in your painting, although I can’t guarantee that either!
That said, I want you to be 100% happy with your painting and I understand that buying art online can be challenging. So, I offer a 7-day return policy. If you receive the painting and decide it’s not for you, or it doesn’t suit the room you bought it for, please feel free to return it to me in its original condition - within 7 days of receiving it and I will be happy to refund, less any postage costs.
If you like something that has been sold, drop me a line, as I might be able to create something just for you.
