I've been very fortunate to collect some incredible art over the years. As an artist, in this article I write about and profile different New Zealand artists, and explain what influenced me to buy their work. Together with an explanation of the different types of materials and mediums used in their paintings, prints or artwork.

How does art influence people? There are important things to consider when buying art. Do you love it? Who created it? How did they make it? What is its provenance and is there any cultural significance? If the artwork has any Māori patterns or design, was the work created by a Te Ao Māori artist? If not, Māori concepts used in any work are stolen and the artist has no right to use them. What is artist copyright? And what is difference between a print or painting?

The implications of the downturn in New Zealand’s ‘soft’ economy have put artists into extreme poverty and suffering. Factors such as rising costs and fewer jobs mean people simply don’t have any disposable income to buy art. Artists’ creative expression is vital to a healthy and open-minded society.

Matariki is the star that signifies reflection, hope, our connection to the environment, and the gathering of people. It is the Māori new year and we are celebrating. At the same time, wishing a very happy winter Solstice to Scotland / Alba!!!
